National green services provider Glendale has helped the London Borough of Lewisham secure 15 Green Flag Awards for its parks and green spaces for the fourth consecutive year.
The scheme sets the benchmark standard for the management of recreational outdoor spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world, recognising and rewarding well-managed parks and green spaces.
Frendsbury Gardens was also awarded the Green Flag Community Award, which acknowledges green spaces that are well maintained, clean, accessible for all and incorporate local communities.
It’s not the first time the parks and green spaces in Lewisham managed by Glendale have been acknowledged as being some of the best in London. In April, Lewisham Council was included in Parks for London’s report Good Parks for London, which promotes good practice and rates how well local authorities manage their parks in the city. The borough was marked in the top three of London’s 32 boroughs.
Glendale also picked up industry magazine Horticulture Week’s Custodian Award in the Best Parks Partnership – Commercial category with Lewisham Council.
Glendale’s partnership with Lewisham Council began in 2000 and was the first of the company’s contracts to combine events management, sports development and infrastructure maintenance with traditional grounds maintenance.
Through the volunteer conservation programme Nature’s Gym, residents of Lewisham are invited to take part in free educational sessions to participate in nature conservation activities, while socialising and keeping active.
Glendale also established the Lewisham Primary School Football League in Blackheath, to provide sporting opportunities for young people.
Adrian Wickham, managing director for the south at Glendale, said: “The Green Flag Awards set the standard for how parks and green spaces should be managed, so to see Lewisham maintain 15 flags for another year running is fantastic. It’s also a testament to, not only the hard work of our specialists but the strength of our partnership with the council on which our success is built.
“Parks and green spaces are hugely important to local communities, so we are thrilled to be able to help more and more people benefit from our initiatives, and see these efforts officially acknowledged through awards and schemes.”
John Thompson, group manager for parks and open spaces at Lewisham Council, said: “The council is proud that its parks and open spaces are widely recognised as being the very best in London. This could not have been achieved without the hard work and dedication of all involved.”
Glendale secured a total of 45 Green Flags for its clients across the UK.
